There are only so many ways to balance the scale.On truly dire days, when the stakes were high and the ref apparently blind, Silver had seen him slide down onto his knees, right there in front of the TV. Flint, already intense under normal circumstances, looked like a supplicant at a particularly brutal altar. The football gods, Silver thought, had never received a more sincere believer.

“You might have made a fine ruler,” Bertilak said, rising as their vessel collided with the shore.
“That is true,” Gawain said cautiously, tethering the boat to the base of the cross, “but I am no warrior. To rule in this land is to bring ruin.”
“Better you had died, then, in order to spare countless lives?” Bertilak asked. “You would have made a martyr of yourself like Winifred.”
“Yes,” Gawain said, helping Bertilak out of the boat. “What a queer pair of ghosts we’d be.”
Bertilak sighed, spreading his arms wide. “Lead on, though thy thwarted fate awaits thee.”
“Death is not the thwarted fate I seek,” Gawain said, grabbing Bertilak’s hand, tired of waiting.
