Summary
In 1823, Father Jack Abbot arrives in a remote town where no priest lasts long and where the dead are never found whole. The Church blames wolves, bandits, and God’s will. But Jack sees the pattern, and every trail leads into the forest. To the witch they all fear.
Samira is everything he’s been taught to fear. Heretical, dangerous, steeped in blood magic, and most importantly; banned from the Church. She is also nothing he expected: calm, deliberate, and unwilling to kill.
But she's also the main suspect in the case. Jack doesn't know if he can trust her.
Drawn together by suspicion and necessity, they form a fragile alliance to uncover the truth behind the killings. But with every secret they unravel, the line between faith and heresy begins to blur, and so does the line between them.
Because someone is targeting the town. And the closer Jack gets to the truth, the closer he gets to the one person he should destroy.

Summary
They’ve been calling each other the stupid nicknames since their time in the VA when an older Vet with a gnarly leg lac from a fishing hook thought Samira and he were together.
Jack was hunched over, suturing, and she wandered in to watch him. She criticized a stitch he made, pointing out he placed it a little too close, leaning in over his shoulder. She stayed there watching him fix it.
“I envy you two,” Mr Kennedy said as Samira was about to pull the curtain back to leave, a smug smile on her face after she had bumped Jack’s shoulder with her own for doing a good job. Mr. Kennedy was smiling at them, a little twinkle from the fluorescents in his eyes. “Young love is such a precious thing.”

Summary
“Jack,” he’s gray now. He wasn’t gray when they met but now his auburn brown hair has faded to almost entirely silver. She imagines it would suit him if there wasn’t so much blood in it. “to what do I owe the displeasure?”
Maybe it’s a mean thing to say when he’s actively being loaded out of an ambulance, but Samira really cannot bring herself to care. He’s upright and breathing, so in the grand scheme of things, the situation can’t be that bad. And you’re allowed to be rude to your ex-husband—it’s one of the big perks of getting divorced before you graduate med school. It’s the participation prize of a failed marriage.
“Hey there, gorgeous.”
