    Summary

Tim was not a person. He was not of flesh and blood or of warmth and soul. He was Batman’s shadow, and he would die under the growing light.

Bruce Wayne had been born to loving parents and a warm manor. Batman had been born of Gotham’s filthiest darkness. Tim had been born with the Dark Knight, slipping through the crevices of his dark shadow beneath his fluttering cape.

This was all true in both the most metaphorical and literal of ways. Tim straddled the blurry line of what was real and what lied between poetic lips. He could not, after all, remember being born to Janet Drake in a hospital bed as Jack Drake held tight to his wife’s hand. What he did remember was shuddering to life one dark night in the shadow that pooled beneath Batman.

    or

Tim is both human and shadow, his consciousness alive in two different forms. In any body, he commits his life to Batman, an unkind fate that he wouldn't give up for the world.

Tim is grateful Hood leaves promptly, in any case, because that means he doesn’t see Tim crawl the last few feet into his house.

[Jack and Janet die uneventfully— at the hands of a home intruder, at 3:41 in the morning on a Thursday. Two gunshots. Tim’s entire world comes to a screeching halt at 3:44, when he finds their bodies.]

    Summary

One night, Robin spots a kid with an overnight bag on a rooftop, and he jumps to the obvious conclusion: the kid's trying to run away. The kid is doing a really bad job of it, though, and that's the sort of thing Robin just has to correct.

Except the kid is Tim Drake, and Tim isn't actually trying to run away. But "running away" does sound a little better than "stalking bat-themed vigilantes through the crime-infested streets of Gotham every night." So he lets Robin have this one.

Besides, that's the end of it, right? Robin might have found Tim once, but no one ever looks for Tim a second time. Robin can think whatever he wants. They'll never see each other again.

    (They see each other again.)

“I’m Tim,” he says, though introducing himself to a puppy makes him flush in embarrassment. “Are you hungry?”

The dog blinks at him, all scared eyes.

“Where’s your family?” Tim asks. “Did they leave you?”

(Or: Tim Drake finds a friend.)
