There’s the loudest of silences. The sound of his mother’s clock that hasn’t stopped ticking in ages even though the battery’s never been changed. A beat. Until Sirius’ lips detach, so slowly, too voluntarily.
“Are you ok?” Sirius asks, so quiet, but it itches at him. He hasn’t slept all night, he needs to know. He has eyes, he knows Remus isn’t ok, but he was so damn worried. They agreed he would stay home last night. Too tired, too weak, to handle a full moon. But he’s bitten his nails dry, hasn’t slept a wink. Full of worry for Remus.
And so Remus just sighs, exasperatedly, and his hand clutches the door handle a bit tighter. There’s a big lump in his throat, it seems heavy like it wants to drop towards the deepest floors of his soul. Except he hasn't felt like owning a soul in a decade.

Summary

Remus doesn't trust Sirius, but Sirius is determined to claw his way back and mend what once was broken by his own foolish hands.

Summary
That's only the smallest thing, though. It's a whole laundry list, but near the top is the fact that Snow doesn't even talk to him beyond a stray word or two. Just below that is the fact that every Fable he's come across either looks at him with righteous fear or foul pride, with sickening whiplash filling the space between. Either way, everyone seems to give him a wider berth these days.
And now he's stuck in his office filing old complaints Crane never dealt with. He purses his lips around another cigarette and lights it with a huff.
