“Well…” Ren starts, even though no more than half an hour ago he punched Akechi in the face, “I… have Phantom Thief money.”
It feels lame in his mouth and so he stops himself there, even though this does not convey nearly the amount of information it needs to. This is backed up when Akechi just stares at him blankly.
“… Which is not Detective Prince money,” He continues, “But… might buy something better than a… questionably clean hotel.”
Akechi snarls a laugh. “I don’t need your handouts.”
“I mean—” Ren rushes, and it’s so pathetic how his protective anger has abandoned him to his vulnerable desperation, “It’s not a handout if I’m there too.”
Akechi blinks at him, then plants his face in his hands. “Oh dear God no.”
Ren looks up in time to see Akechi outside the train window before he departs from Tokyo. After missing his train to catch up with him, and with Akechi having nowhere to go in light of his miraculous resurrection, it's only logical and ergonomic they share a hotel room for a night. Or two.

“What do you think, Akira? Was he really that bad?"
Akira blinked, remembered the way he’d lingered in the doorway, perfect hair and plastic smile. He’d been wearing a ridiculous sweater vest over a pristine shirt, eyes the colour of the light filling the room. He remembered the harsh knock on the hollow wall and way his mind had faltered when he looked from Ryuji’s easy, beaming face to Akechi, because he could confidently say he’d never seen someone so naturally robotic before in his life.
In his third year of university, Akechi is forced to confront what he’s always avoided – needing someone, and being needed in return.

While Ren remains, Goro feels the universe is determined to break them apart.
Ren only remembers two things: a task that he has to do no matter what and the words If only we had met earlier. Knowing nothing about what any of those things meant, Ren latches on to the only thing he does know: Akechi Goro. But keeping his promise to stay by Goro's side becomes increasingly difficult when it slowly becomes clear that his memories may hold a horrible truth about his existence and why he's here.

The boy turned his head, registering the sight of Goro for the first time. Gray eyes widened behind his mask as a frantic desperation entered his expression. With newfound urgency he managed to sit upright. But he wouldn't be able to get to his feet in time. Not when the monstrosity already bore down with its next attack.
