Summary
Father’s Day is a major cause for celebration in the Strand-Reyes household, but when six-year-old Jonah becomes overwhelmed and reveals a secret that he was trying to keep from both papas, TK and Carlos must come up with a way to soothe his soul.
TK opens the card. The sound that comes out of him is both a laugh and a cry, like he’s sustained a sudden tickle to the ribs. Jonah’s handwriting always starts small and gets bigger as he becomes more enthusiastic about his message.
“You’re so welcome, buddy,” TK sniffs. The words we are best friends are slightly mangled and concertinaed because Jonah was running out of room on the page. “It’s really amazing that I get to be your best friend and hang out with you, and to be your papa who gets to look after you. And I always will, all my life, okay?”
“Okay,” Jonah agrees.
“Please will you give this card to Papa?” TK says before he loses the ability to speak.
“Here ya go, Papa,” Jonah says, holding the card out close to Carlos’ face and making him go cross-eyed. When Carlos accepts the card, Jonah leans back against TK again and plays with his hand. He can never decide whose hand he prefers playing with. TK’s or Carlos’. Both are great.

Summary
Two nights, six years apart.
In early 2020, newly arrived in Austin and still finding his footing, TK and his new friends Paul & Marjan visit Austin's iconic Bat Bridge. Despite a mishap involving one very spooked firefighter (Paul swears he's not afraid of bats) and a phone jettisoned to the bottom of the Colorado River, they bond over their new city and dare to imagine what their futures here might look like.
Six years later, TK revisits the Bat Bridge, this time with Carlos & Jonah. He finds himself reflecting on the boy he was that night, and everything his life in Austin has come to be.
---
“Who’s Carlos?” Marjan asks, a teasing glint in her eye, voice pitched an octave higher than usual.
“He’s no one,” TK yelps, lunging for the phone.
She snatches it away and holds it over her head, grinning.
“Oh yeah? Well why does No One want you to get tacos with him some time?”
The phone buzzes in her hand. All three of them freeze.
“Oh my god,” Marjan breathes, lowering the screen back to eye level. “No One just sent a selfie. And he’s really hot.”

Summary
Firefighter TK Strand and window washer Carlos Reyes first meet far above the Manhattan streets, with TK rescuing Carlos from the forty-fourth floor of the Chrysler Building before his safety line snaps. When Carlos seeks his hero out to thank him, TK is going through a nuclear-bad breakup and back living with a father who is deeply affected by 9/11. But by letting Carlos into his life, maybe it’s TK who will feel himself falling.
Or: What if Carlos was the window washer that TK saved in the Pilot? And what if Judd was with Owen on 9/11?
Sometimes, he can feel the phantom bruise of the Narcan on his thigh, the light of himself blinking chaotically before snapping back on, how he’d sobbed against his terrified dad. But that’s not all there is anymore. He can still feel Carlos clinging to him as he was lifted to safety. He can still feel Carlos inside him, from nights ago, the angle he found, the way he moved. He can feel Carlos kissing his shoulder.
And after.
He can feel the after.
Lying at the foot of the bed, spent and breathless, the weight of Carlos’ sleepy head in his naked lap, TK running his fingers through his curls.
He can feel it all.
