“Why?" Shane's tone was more biting than he intended. "What do you think is going to happen if I stay? Are you gonna make me a goddamned tuna melt?”
Rozanov, to his credit, took the words like the blow they were. His eyes widened, then he covered his face with his palms and muttered something in Russian.
Shane had never seen shame written across those features before.
In April 2017, Shane Hollander suffers the most painful not-breakup he’ll ever experience. Months later, he's outed. Two years after that, a broken knee ends his career.

Summary
Shane is in a post-game interview when his world stops.
He’s just answered a question about Montreal’s offensive strategy going into the game. Clean passes, avoid penalties, draw defenders wide. It had worked and the Voyagers had beat Colorado soundly, 4-1. Shane had scored two of the goals and assisted on a third.
Usually, Shane would be eager to boast about the win to Ilya. But ever since their fight- since Ilya told Shane to leave- winning feels hollow. Losing feels better, somehow. As if Shane deserves to lose after being so selfish. Ilya gave up everything for him- his home, his team, and to some extent- his happiness. Hockey. Ilya gave up hockey- good hockey- for Shane.
A ripple goes through the room of reporters. Shane swears he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘crash’. But no one is paying attention to him anymore.
“What’s going on?” he asks into the microphone, feeling strange at the role reversal. Usually, he’s the one being asked questions.
No one answers. And this time he knows that he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘Centaurs’.

“You didn’t tell me he was smirking, Shane!” Jackie gasped from her spot on the arm of the couch. “Oh, he totally wants you!”
Shane glared at her, “Again, no he doesn’t. Looking at me and smirking when we make eye contact does not mean he wants me.”
“Yes, it does,” J.J. and Hayden chimed in at the exact same time. They both chuckled and glanced at each other before fist-bumping.

“Holy shit—wait a second!” The TD Garden arena commentator’s voice suddenly cut through the speakers. “Is that actually Hollander?”
A wave of murmurs spread through the audience. People in the nearby rows started to turn around, craning their necks. Shane sank lower in his seat, but it was already too late.
“Why is he at a Boston game? Sitting in the stands?”
Now the entire arena seemed to be buzzing.
Fans pointed toward his section. Phones came out. Even a few players on the ice glanced up at the screen. There was no point hiding anymore. With a resigned sigh, Shane pushed his hood down and gave the camera a small, awkward wave.
“Well, that’s certainly unusual,” the commentator laughed.
Down on the ice, Rozanov was standing motionless by the boards, staring up at the jumbotron, which was still broadcasting the live feed of Shane’s face in the crowd.
Shane tried a smirk, and could almost see Rozanov’s mouth drop open before Marleau smacked him in the back of the helmet with his glove.

“I don’t think you’re supposed to smoke on campus.” Shane mutters, glancing up at the cigarette, then back at the guy’s eyes.
The guy snorts.
“Da. Good thing we are not on campus. I am Ilya.” He holds out his hand.
Shane eyes it, then slowly reaches out with his own. He could smell vodka? on the guy’s breath. Some sort of alcohol, at least. He wasn’t super familiar with the assortments.
But, he doesn't want to be rude. That was one thing he wasn’t.
“Il-ya,” he says, “My name is Shane.”
“Shane.” Ilya repeats.
