“O-okay,” she called back, trying to sound normal though she was close to passing out from overstimulation. She pushed her hand under the sleeve of her sweater and began to scratch at her skin. The burning felt like fighting fire with fire, but that doesn't mean it worked.
Why couldn't she breathe right?
The air was coming in and pumping out but it felt like cotton — no, worse. Pebbles — sitting in her lungs. It was excruciatingly inescapable.
“Zoey?” her tone was concerned now. The rapper was shaky. She never got shaky. Mira made her way to the doorway of the kitchen, tossing the popcorn in each bowl in sync so the butter would mix in. “Something wrong?”
“Nothing!”
Now her voice was high — loud — even though the choreographer was right there. She didn't need to project quite so much, and yet she was.
Mira sat the bowls down on the counter, stepping over slowly. Her voice was gentle and deliberate, “Then why do you sound like you're about to cry?”
“I'm not.”
“That's not what I asked.”

Everything was going back to normal. They were doing just fine. So why was everything feeling weird again? Tense? They were doing well up until that interview.
