Summary
Shane pulls open a drawer where he keeps a pen and a note pad, and quickly pulls it out to start writing. Ilya won’t tell him what is wrong, but he at least has a few ideas.
1. Ilya misses Boston. He lived there for years, had established a life there with friends. More of a clubbing and party scene than Ottawa. He misses Svetlana.
2. Ilya misses the Raiders. He moved to a bottom of the barrel team, before Ilya came along they lost more games than they won and it’s only recently that they’ve been winning anything, and even then the losses are still frequent.
3.Shane stops writing. His heart hammers in his ears as he stares down at the notepad, the sad little list looking back at him.
3. Ilya is lonely. He misses sex. He misses women.

Shane notices that something is bothering Ilya. He seems miserable, and the less he talks to Shane about it, the more Shane begins to spiral, searching for a reason and ways to make it better. Turns out, he could not have been more wrong.Based on chapter 21 of The Long Game, instead of Ilya suggesting that Shane should sleep with other men, Shane suggests Ilya should sleep with women.

“Is so boring, Hollander. Of course you want to know this. But Ilya Rozanov and Boston Raiders exist in this world, so crystal ball says, so sad, but no.”
“Fuck off. What are these questions even for, anyway? Are you interviewing me for something? Wouldn’t you have to, like, tell me if you were?”
Ilya is quick to assure Hollander before his paranoia takes him right out of this phone call. “It is not for interview, Hollander. I am just wondering. Answer the question.”
“And I can’t say that I would want to know whether I win the Cup.”
“Yes, other than that.”
“I guess… I guess I would want to know, like, am I happy?”
Ilya reads an article about 36 questions that are supposed to make people fall in love. He decides to ask them to Shane.- Language:
