Billy used to be a good brother, and then they moved, and Max doesn't recognize him anymore. She misses the Billy she loves, and she hates this new Billy. She hates him so much, she thinks maybe he deserves Neil's punishments.
She thinks the party would agree, and then she actually brings it up one day, and she finds out that she was wrong. She also finds out that maybe the brother she loves is still in there somewhere.

(This is NOT a Max-bashing fic, this just explores the kind of thinking she might have had to apply to her situation if Billy was a really good brother to her and then did an angry 180 after having to leave California. She victim blames Billy to cope with both the existence of abuse in her household and the fact that her brother hates her now. Sibling relationships under an authoritarian, abusive parent are difficult and complicated.)

A season 4 fix-it fic in which Vecna dies, everyone survives (even people you thought were already dead), and there are happy endings all round.
(In other words: they survived the apocalypse. Now they have to survive everything that comes after, including but not limited to: PTSD, sexuality crises, surprise babies, repairing relationships, vacation planning, 'adulting', and far too many people living in one house. Not necessarily in that order.)

Summary
When Billy arrives to the Byers house to retrieve Max, she shows him the dead monster in the fridge and says that they could really use his help. Against his better judgment, Billy agrees to help Max, the kids, and Steve Harrington with setting fire to some creepy stuff in a creepier tunnel.
His life and Steve's change because of that decision.
