They didn't talk about it. In fact, they have never once talked about it.
Instead, it was in every shared, lingering glance. It was the subtext in every conversation, private or otherwise. It followed them to every mission assignment and debriefing, every old Team 10 meetup, every game of shoji. Every stolen, shared cigarette.
It was manageable, at first, when he had thought it was just his problem alone; when he thought his feelings were unacknowledged and, worse still, unreturned by the man he loved.
Shikamaru was twenty three when he finally allowed himself to accept that his feelings were not, in fact, unrequited after all. Nor were they remaining unacknowledged, Asuma beginning to slowly, secretly, silently toe the line that Shikamaru had so carefully drawn between them all those years ago.
And then it wasn't so manageable anymore.
