Summary
“I was in love with my best friend.” He said.
He was still staring at the cap. He couldn’t tell if its green was the right one. He couldn’t recognize his favorite shade anymore.
“From the past tense,” Michael murmured, his face giving nothing away. “I’m guessing it didn’t go well.”
In between their shared breaths and the small sentences that required courage to say, Michael’s hand had absentmindedly slipped from Jamal’s waist, his palm resting lightly on Jamal’s stomach, making the muscles beneath it stealthily tighten.
“Ask your mom about that.”
Michael laughed softly. Jamal smiled at the sound.
Or: In the wake of heartbreak, Jamal finds unexpected solace in late-night texts, rooftops, and the reckless kindness of his therapist’s son, Michael Olise.
