Summary
When the Viper taps Dorian and Quillon to come with him and Tarquin on a infiltration mission meant to distract or disarm the guard response on a slaver's den, Tarquin makes a quip about bringing more front line men so the mages aren't casting as the front line. Of course that's as far as it goes, and later that night three mages and a sleeper walk into a mage snare. Luckily, the Viper surrounds himself with competent people and that includes the nonmagical kind.
Tarquin gets a little bit of a kick out of the fighting, until he realizes what's actually at stake.

Ashur has enemies in every role he fills. Sending flesh and blood assassins has a famously, ridiculously, unbelievably bad track record. So someone gets creative: it's harder to kill a demon and harder to see it coming if it's wearing a face you don't expect, right?They really should have taken more care with the wording, though, if they actually wanted Ashur dead.

Ashur’s palm pressed to the old wound and he looked at Tarquin like he was something precious. Slowly, he slid down Tarquin’s body, and pressed his lips against the scar.
“Blessed are they who stand before the corrupt and do not falter,” he said against Tarquin’s skin.
He moved to the line of scarring under Tarquin’s left pectoral, kissing the line of neat scarring that Tarquin was most proud of, as much a mark of what he’d survived as the wound on his side.
“Blessed are the peace keepers, champions of the just,” he continued, turning his head to kiss the scar’s twin on Tarquin’s right, “Blessed are the righteous, the lights in the shadows.”
He kissed his way up Tarquin’s breast bone, up his neck, his jaw, until he found Tarquin’s lips again.
“In their blood, the Maker’s will is written.”
