Aragorn knew the cadence of her breathing now. Knew when it changed. Knew when she did not sleep. He told himself it was no more than sense—tactical, necessary—for the road ahead, for a leader to mark what might fail. Yet it did not sit in him as a thought alone. At times it came as a stir low in his chest, a softening that had no rightful place there.
