Theme: "Breakaway"
“I’m sorry for barging in,” I blurt out with my head down. I feel so guilty and embarrassed I can’t even look at him. “I couldn’t have called before, I also forgot my phone. I-.”
I stop abruptly. Wait, that’s not what I meant to say.
“Also?” he repeats, tilting his head on the side and looking at me, and there’s something in his eyes that I don’t recognise. It’s in his whole expression, but I’m struggling to place it. “Are you okay?”
“I’m,” I start, and my voice is thick all of a sudden.
It’s worry that I see, and it grips my throat. I know what I must look like - no jacket, my hair plastered to my face with water, my shoes making squishy noises as I shift uncomfortably. I’m so pitiful and pathetic. I need to find a way out of here before I let him see - see me for real, how unpretty I am, how sad my life is. But when I talk, the words that come out come from further than my brain and I can’t stop them.
“I’m sorry,” my mouth articulates clumsily. “I- I didn’t know where else to go.”
