“You said you had to tell me something,” Hua Cheng gasps out. “What was it?”

Xie Lian flips them again, pinning Hua Cheng against the wall of the cave. His eyes are luminous in the low light, glimmering gold with slitted pupils. “I’m - in season,” he says, sounding distracted, and drives his hips into Hua Cheng’s with a flick of his powerful tail. He leans forward, nosing at Hua Cheng’s neck. “I don’t know if I can hold back.”

“In season?” Hua Cheng asks, breathless.

“Mating season,” Xie Lian explains, scraping his teeth over Hua Cheng’s skin. “My eggs are ready.”

Happy birthday, Hua Cheng, have some eggs!

    Summary

The god, in his infinite silence, sealed in stone, had spoken to him without words. Understanding pierced through his feeble mind like lightning, threatening to break it into a million pieces and, at the same time, holding it together. It spoke of compassion and tenderness, but also of grief and loneliness, vast and aching, much more agonizing than any human could stand. Hua Cheng's mortal heart had lifted and broken all at once as ancient, godlike emotions, far beyond his ability to comprehend, flooded his being.

    A prince, a saint, a god, a martyr.

    His god-

    His god?

Where had that thought come from? It did not feel like his own, and yet it unfurled from the deepest, most intimate part of his soul, as though it had always been there, waiting.

    His god.

    or

Hua Cheng was a mortal who worshipped a god long forgotten by the world. He never asked for anything in return.
Until one day, all of his prayers were answered.

"Your Highness, forget everything I told you... I don't care how I serve you. I would be happy to take every enemy's blow for you. I would be happy to be your guard dog to keep you safe. I would be happy to clean your boots and wash your robes. Bathe you and comb your hair in the mornings... And yet... do not believe me, Your Highness, do not believe me. I want more. I have always wanted more... Please, forgive me."

(Xie Lian listens to 800 years' worth of Hua Cheng's accumulated prayers).

[It’s something about the way he kneels. Hair pulled back in a ponytail, inky black as it cascades down his back, taking Xie Lian’s hand with such reverence. Xie Lian stiffens, gasps. His eyes fill with tears unrelated to the venom currently coursing through him. It’s been a long time since he’s cried from pain, after all.

“You-!” Is all he manages to say before he starts to sob.

It’s all the warning Hua Cheng gets before he’s tackled bodily into the hot sand.]

Or: what if Xie Lian recognized Wu Ming when they were dealing with the snake bite hand sucking debacle?
