Summary
Everyone has their thing that they do to keep the darkness at bay. Some people have houseplants, some people fall into marriages that they shouldn't, and some people ingest every substance they can get their hands on. Jean wears women's clothing, sometimes, and that is no one's business besides his own.
So when Lieutenant Kitsuragi does a wellness check on him because he hasn't shown up to work in a while and has a well-known history of playing chicken with a loaded gun, he is surprised at what he finds.

Summary
Set during a single night in maybe ‘53 or ‘54. Jean’s not doing good. Harry got injured wrapping up a case, just a concussion, but it’s an overnight stay at the lazareth. Jean’s doing bad. He asks Kim for a favor, expecting a firm no and lots of negative social and professional consequences, hoping for a no and violence.
“Jean, I’m not going to shoot you.”
“What, Harry teach you to read minds too?”
“Nobody can read minds. You’ve been staring.”
“Maybe I’m checking you out. Why are you still armed?”
“You’re not checking me out. You know why I’m still armed.”
“Because you’re a faggot and I’m your suicidal straight coworker who asked you to fuck me, and you don’t think I want you to fuck me, you think I want you to fucking shoot me. Which you’d have to because you can’t take me in a fight.”

Summary
Harry finds himself in the liminal space between Martinaise and actually having to be Harry Du Bois again. He needs to return to his apartment, and his job, and his life, but the prospect is terrifying; everything that was once him is everything he can't allow himself to be ever again. Kim helps him make the transition, and Harry pines wildly over him. They eat food and talk about the homo-sexual underground. Harry tries not to cry a lot.
