She survives by following the rules:
Don’t open the door.
Don’t trust the voices.
Don’t look too closely at the things outside.
She breaks one anyway.
A conversation where there shouldn’t be one.
A presence that lingers too long.
A pattern that doesn’t behave the way it should.
She went from being a shadow to being a piece on the board.
The problem is—
there’s no way to tell what kind of piece she is.
And in this town, that might not matter.
Because the most dangerous thing you can be…
is something worth noticing.
