Summary
A lot of time spent with Jax meant she'd always note the little things. And curiously so—for some new reason she's not aware of—in recent times, his stray and nonchalantly tossed cups are now left bent or broken as he throws them. Crushed from the waist, marks of soda rivulets sogging the sides of the cup.
She thought Jax never handled his cups that way. What brought about the change?
Pomni gets curious when Jax starts acting differently around her and something else. Three times when it happens, and one time she realizes something else entirely.

It took one snoop in Pomni's little diary to figure out she liked him.
But it took a week of triathlons, food fights, bodyguards and multiple emotional breakdowns to realize Jax liked her back.
Alternatively, Jax is an idiot in love and makes it Pomni's problem.

Eight hours. Eight hours in a moving steel box, twenty-four more in a secluded campsite.
Pomni doesn't remember what the cast has sacrificed for this calm adventure, because cramping up in a car like sardines in a tin can can't qualify as calm in the slightest. Car rides are stressful, touchy, worse with this kind of ensemble.
Eight hours. Eight hours stuck on Jax's lap.
This campsite cannot come any faster.

"God," he laughs, but it comes out strained. "If you want this to be a date so bad, just tell me."
"You know," Pomni turns to him, the corner of her mouth twitching downwards. "With all your pushing, I'm beginning to think you're the one considering this a date."
Pomni and the circus cast call on Jax for movie night, but she goes to find him when he's a no-show. And then there's two, and Pomni finds she doesn't hate it one bit.

“Pomni?”
Jax's voice is low again, face turning entirely her way, and she only then notices how close he is to feel his breath against her skin. Hands still far apart.
“You mentioned not liking being forgotten,” he recalls, eyes drifting down to his hands.
She nods. “It hurts.”
“What if that person… the one who forgot you, wanted to forget?”
To be forgotten and afraid is Pomni's greatest fear. Post the events of their ringmaster's death, she seeks out someone who might understand.

Summary
They’ve long lost their humanity.
That’s what living in the Circus does to people—it strips them of their complexity by assigning them a role. An inevitable fate for those unfortunate souls that set foot into this world. It’s only a matter of time before the system claims them. And yet, no matter how many times he tells himself this, he is unable to shake off the uneasiness that blooms in his chest whenever he interacts with her.
She’s still too complex, too unpredictable.
She’s too human.
Or, Jax tries to fit Pomni into an archetype, only for his defenses to end up crumbling under her caring nature.

“We stay together,” she says. She faces Kinger, still staring at the ground. “No matter what happens, we don’t split up, we don’t go anywhere on our own lest we abstract.” Pomni squeezes Jax’s fingers so hard he feels like they could break. “We’re all we have.”
At the end of the world, at the end of everything, Pomni is the only thing keeping Jax from abstracting.

I love Dark Circus AUs, and it was interesting seeing how insanity would alter these characters' actions in a wholy different way, especially how this fic presented its narrative!

Pomni used to think the worst thing about the Digital Circus was that it wouldn’t let her go home.
It let her keep her memories of home just well enough to miss it, dangled the idea of “exit” just far enough away that she could still reach for it sometimes, even knowing it wasn’t there.
But lately she’d started to suspect there was something worse.
The Circus let her form attachments.
And then it reminded her those could be taken, too.
