I had colleagues again, and after three years, what a change it was: all the everyday details of Gethen, which had become familiar to me over the years, I saw as new again through their eyes.
But they, too, were unfamiliar to me in several ways: I had not had time to get to know them well during our journey to Gethen, since we had been in deep sleep all that time. And how strange to speak Hainish again! It was not a difficult language, having for thousands of years had its complexities worn down by use as a lingua franca—but it was neither Karhidish nor my native Earth language which I used in my own mind. It brought me back to my years training with the Ekumen on Hain.

Summary
I had been born in the bitter cold during the month of Thern to a traitor and a suicide. They had been neither of those things at the time, but a person's shadow can stretch through time as much as it can through space. We may walk in the direction of the sun not realizing that our shadow grows longer and longer behind us as darkness fast approaches.
I couldn’t discard my mother’s legacy but I could continue it. But not in Ehrenrang or in the Domain of Estre or, indeed, on Gethen at all. I would join the Ekumen and go to the stars.

I had not told anyone in Estre I was coming. I hadn’t known how, or what I would say. In Gethen there is no fear of being turned away, left standing at the gate. There will always be a welcome in a hearth, for a person with a shadow.
