Summary
“Stay with me, kid,” Slider said a bit sharply, watching the other man grow paler. “I need you to focus, right? We’ve gotta help Bradley.”
“Bradley—-” Maverick borderline whined, forcing himself to smile tightly and look back up at his godson’s face. At his terrified godson’s face. “It’s—it’s gonna be okay, sweetheart, okay?”
“H-h-h-urts,” Bradley sobbed, tears streaming down his face as he clung to Slider’s shirt with his uninjured hand.
“I know—I know it does,” Mav nodded, mind racing as he saw scarlet soaking through the tshirt.

“What do you mean, they’re gone?”
“We can’t—we haven’t been able to locate the lieutenants, sir. Search and rescue is going to make another pass but we have been unable to find them,” the sailor tried to explain.
“They—what about the dye or their beacons? They were barely 300 yards off the shore when they went in,” Viper argued.
“The beacons appear to have malfunctioned, or, at least, three of them have. The one beacon never activated at all.”
“And the dye?” Jester persevered.
“At this point, it’s been hours, sir. The dye will be present but so diluted and dispersed it won’t be a very accurate location tool, especially as the sun starts getting lower in the sky.”
The two Top Gun instructors exchanged dark looks before turning back to the serviceman in front of them.

Some nights it even kept him up—or woke him up. Those were the worst nights.
He’d finally sink into a somewhat exhausted sleep and inevitably roll in a direction that left him waking up in absolute agony.
Part of Mav, the dark, utterly lost part, believed he deserved whatever this pain was. He’d killed Goose—why shouldn’t he be in agony? Hell— God knew his chest felt like it was being ripped in half some days. Those days when all he could think about was clinging to Nick’s too still form—when all he could feel was cold and wet—
