Summary
"Not a chance, sir. You can't go on like this, beggin' you pardon. It has to be done tonight, an' I know it's not a pretty stuff to go through." Sam's words fell into muffled silence. He jolted his hand from Frodo's shoulder, and took in a quick breath. "Want me to help?"
Frodo thought himself to be rather clumsy in everything connected to his illness, or more so, his many illnesses. It took him time to learn bandaging his hand and some parts of his back, and he would lie if he were to say the phantom pains in his right fingers were a thing he managed to simply ignore. Still, he was much more confident in almost every aspect of it, especially compared to the days he first got that. He understood — were he to try hard enough, he would be good with healing his own scars, even the ones on the high up if he was to use a long item of a kind. He could manage.
In truth, he just preferred when Sam was doing it.
And so he finally smiled and made an attempt to stand up from his desk, though his legs still felt quite unsteady.
"It would be a pleasure."
Or: Sam offers his help in tending to Frodo's scars. Not a minute is spent on healing them in conventional ways.

Summary
Then he would turn around, pointing the finger of his left hand to the farthest of departing ships. And the children would cling even so closer to him, attempting with their whole might to spot something out in the depths.
"Back there, on the other side of the shore, lies the Shire," his very way of talk took the mannerism of a storyteller, softened, smoothed out, "And in the Shire, there is a hobbit hole, the one alike all of the other holes my people live in. And near that hobbit hole, a garden blooms. A beautiful garden, with flowers of yellow and blue and green. The most beautiful of gardens, it is, worth looking back for."
"Did you love the garden?" a little girl asked once, nearly jumping over the balcony. The questions they asked after were nonetheless different, futile to foresee. They were curious about the Shire, and the hobbits, and everything concerning Middle-earth, with frankly few exceptions.
The last time, however, it was precisely this one. Did Frodo love the garden?
Or: Frodo Baggins gets a rather unusual habit of watching the sea from the balcony every morning. No one can find out why.

Summary
My problem (or rather, the complete lack thereof) was not that over the years he had taken several significant steps, as a magician, to equalise our relationship. It was not his perpetually clumsy manner of joking, nor did it have anything to do with his futile attempts at indistinct apologies and forced expressions of gratitude. It was not his crooked smiles, which for some reason always twitched at the left corner of his lips, nor even in his habit of falling asleep well after midnight, his head bowed on the surface of the wooden table, that wooden table on which he worked until his fingers were covered with small bruises where he held his ballpoint pen.
It was that instead of looking at him, as only the worst traitor of their kind would do, I rather looked through him. There was something fundamentally strange about the mere existence of the human body. The concept was so distant from me, buried deep in the indistinguishable connections of bones and tangled pathways of neurons, that it became harder for me to understand when it became so close to me.
Or
The concept of looking at someone you once shared a body with from an outside perspective can feel rather strange.

"Does it hurt?"
As if in slow motion in an old film, she watched Bartimaeus stop, turning to her with the clearest emotion of unfiltered perplexity that she knew not only in a human being, but in anyone.
His body froze in the middle of an unfinished step, his eyebrows raised slightly, his lips pressed into a thin line. Kitty had forgotten that Bartimaeus didn't need to blink — he had only done so to imitate something human, something far from his own nature. He lost such small details very quickly, but rarely for long. Unless he wanted to scare her, and something intuitive told her that this was not the case.
"What?" The voice with which he uttered this did not seem angry, shocked, or sad to her. In fact, it sounded like complete and utter emptiness, and if Kitty didn't know him better, she would already be taming the goosebumps on her skin.
"Your side," she explained, stopping at the top of the stairs. "Does it hurt?"
Or
Kitty is lost in search for freedom in a world that doesn't allow it, the thing Bartimaeus is really familiar with.

Summary
Now Nathaniel was down on his knees, his legs battered with phantom bruises, incapable of moving his fingers. His palms, clasped tightly together like a rosary, fought the urge to press against the wound somewhere deep in his side to dull the pain. His lips were covered with a thin layer of cold, and his own name spread warmly across his tongue. He knew he had never had any other choice.

Summary
Frodo thinks he knows himself very well. He's committed to being just like his uncle: wise, strange, and unattached. Though, the company of his gardener and closest friend is always welcome. Frodo tries not to think too deeply about why that is.
Sam does know himself very well. He's accepted that he and Frodo are just too different in status for anything to happen between them. He's not even so sure that they're officially friends.
Bilbo, as always, knows more than he should. He finds the whole thing very funny.
