Derek doesn't know why he's here.
It's been a long few weeks, and Derek feels like he could sleep for a month now that the threat of the Nogitsune has been neutralized and he finally has time to acknowledge the bone deep exhaustion that’s tugging at him. He's earned the rest. He's earned the right to go home and shut out the world for a few days whilst he can, until the next disaster inevitably comes knocking at Beacon Hills' door.
He'd been ready to do just that, his car pointed in the direction of home as soon as Aiden’s body was taken care of and there was nothing else left for Derek to do. He doesn't even remember making the decision, but rather than taking the familiar route and pulling into his usual space outside the loft, he’d found himself parking up in front of the Stilinski house instead.

“Derek,” Stiles whined, stretching the vowels out much more than was necessary.
“What?”
“I’m so hot.”
“And?”
Stiles reached out one hand to smack blindly towards Derek’s face. He missed entirely for about five smacks before giving up and smacking him in the side instead. Derek didn’t react, because it hadn’t been intended to hurt him, just show him Stiles was displeased with his lack of sympathy.
He knew it was all a very unsubtle way to convince Derek to buy a portable A/C unit, but he refused. Not because he wanted Stiles to suffer, but because if Stiles was comfortable, he wouldn’t wander around the loft in his underwear. Derek was not going to give up having a mostly naked boyfriend parading around the place.
Did that make him an asshole? Probably, but Stiles knew what he was signing up for when they started dating two years ago. Derek was living up to his assholeish reputation by refusing to buy an A/C unit so he could ogle his boyfriend as he wandered around the loft mostly naked.

Derek pulled the chair closer to the bed and sat down, eyes scanning every detail like he couldn’t decide what to focus on. “What’s going on?”
Stiles didn’t answer right away. He looked out the window for a second, his expression tightening, and when he turned back, his voice was quiet.
“Bone cancer,” he said. “Osteosarcoma, to be specific. I’m on my first round of chemo. They started it last week.”

Summary
“How are you?” Stiles asked, falling onto the couch beside Derek and leaning heavily into him. “How was your day? How’s the book?” He kissed his cheek once. Twice. Then two more times in quick succession.
Derek turned to look at him, Stiles affecting his most innocent expression as he patiently waited for Derek to answer his questions.
Instead of doing so, Derek slowly closed his book, losing his page, and set it on the coffee table in front of them. Then he turned to look at Stiles, leaning back slightly against the arm rest, and crossed his arms.
“What do you want?”

Derek knocked on the door impatiently.
“Stiles, open the door.”
Still there was no response.
Derek reached down and tried the knob, and thankfully, Stiles hadn’t locked the door.
He twisted the knob and wrenched the door open, but it didn’t open very far, bumping against something that was blocking its path. Derek was able to slip his head between the door and the door jamb so he could peer around to see what was blocking it.
It was Stiles, lying unconscious on the ground.
