“Have you ever been kissed?” Vash asks into the dark.
Wolfwood startles, then sighs. Vash was so quiet, he could have sworn he was already fast asleep by now.
Of course Vash would be thinking of such useless things during a time like this. Who could possibly be thinking about kissing right now? Wolfwood rolls on his back, staring at the ceiling. The double moons were high and full, casting an eerie glow. He could almost make out the texture of the stucco on the ceiling, cracks from water damage just starting to form. By tomorrow, they would be gone, and this room would barely remember them before the wind swept their dust away and another miserable person wandered in.
“What’s it to you?” Wolfwood says.
At the end of the world, Vash and Wolfwood come together to create some memories.

Ever watch two people on the worst date of their lives?
Wolfwood rolls his eyes. “One date isn’t going to set you ten steps back from world peace, idiot.”
There’s hurt in the small smile Vash gives him. “Being a wanted man isn’t really a selling point, Wolfwood. You don’t have to rub it in.”
The words tumble out of him faster than he can think, slipping through his fingers as they spill across the table.
“I don’t mind.”
“Yeah, you don’t,” Vash groans, hanging his head as he messes with his hair. He’s a little flushed, just pink around the edges. Wolfwood can tell his own face is burning, too. “But I’m not dating you.”
“Why not?”
It’s Vash’s turn to be stunned, his eyes widening in questioning shock as if to ask, I don’t know, why not?

Vash has always been beautiful. In the sun and in the moonlight, covered in blood and freshly clean, smiling or crying. He’s beautiful like this, too—this other version of him with the too-sad eyes and hollow smiles that chip pieces out of Wolfwood’s chest.

Vash considers that, the revelation that he could possibly ever want something and be granted it. In the end, he shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not asking somebody to do that.”
“And if they offered?”
"Are you offering?"
Vash wants to help people however he can, including getting them off, but they never return the favor. Wolfwood changes that.

“Caramel Macchiato with six pumps of vanilla!”
He doesn’t ask for the man’s name. Instead, he simply shakes his head, makes the drink, and writes ‘Blondie’ on the cup.
Or: In another world, Vash and Wolfwood meet under the most normal circumstances ever. But there are forces at work that are anything but normal, threatening to tear them apart. The glass displays row after row of little chocolates and candies, each with a simple label listing the item and any allergens the item contains. Wolfwood is squinting inside, trying to figure out what the fuck a “chocolate haystack” is supposed to be, when there’s another clatter and someone stumbles out of the back room.
Wolfwood’s first thought is, Damn, he’s cute. And he is—big blue eyes, a riot of blond spikes he wants to run his fingers through, a sheepish smile.
Wolfwood’s second thought, the one he verbalizes, is, “Oh my god no.” Because the guy is wearing a red apron and, above a couple brightly-colored pins, a black and white paisley bandana.
The guy snorts and says, pointedly, “Howdy.”

Summary
Wolfwood learns only after the initial meeting that Vash’s hair is blond and not a deep, violent red.
They meet for the first time when Vash shows up in the middle of the night, looking more dead than alive– more writhing mass of blood than anything particularly humanoid– and begs to please be let in because he is injured and needs somewhere to heal and to hide. Wolfwood does not know who or what is at his door, but the more Vash talks, the more he says that he just knows this is his best shot, the more Wolfwood thinks he’s right.
Wolfwood invites him in, knowing full well that he’s saying goodbye to the last shred of sanity he can claim to have, but… he does it anyway. Then the two of them spend the long, lazy days of late summer together, sharing bottom-shelf whiskey and bedtime stories in the citronella-scented night, even as monsters lurk in the shadows. Even though Vash may very well be one of those monsters. They can only hope there’s time to sort out their feelings before Vash’s past catches up to him.

Wolfwood looks different. Different than even the hundreds of ghosts—threads of shimmering grey shot through his temples and fine lines splintered out around his eyes like someone dragged a feather through damp clay. Like he’s aged almost decade in the year since he—
“Died,” Vash rasps. “You died.”
Wolfwood’s eyebrows shoot up in an expression that Vash has remembered so many times that his own faulty memory rewrote over the real thing.
“This isn’t—how?” he asks, voice warping around the cold static clogging his mouth.
“You ever hear of Jesus Christ?” Wolfwood grins, and it’s exactly the same. Like no time has passed. Like he’s so proud of his stupid joke. Like Vash didn’t lay his still-warm corpse in the ground and bury him on the other side of that building.
Like the inexorable inspiral of a binary star, Vash is drawn back to the orphanage in December and the unexpectedly empty grave of his dearest friend.
Or, Vash and Wolfwood and all their tomorrows.

Summary
The fact is as well that there really isn’t anything Wolfwood can do to make the feelings go away. Sometimes you just have to ride it out, rather than go around turning over stones waiting for the perfect moment or phrase that will make everything feel better. There’s just no avoiding feeling shitty, particularly when you’ve lived the life that Vash has.
Although, from Wolfwood’s position… It’s not like he can’t do anything.
“Don’t know if I can really stop it,” Wolfwood mutters, and releases Vash’s wrist, cupping his other hand against his face and turning to kiss at his wrist. It’s the prosthetic, so Vash won’t really feel it, but Wolfwood hopes the message is clear enough either way. “But I can take your mind off it for a while.”
Vash opens and closes his mouth, then swallows. “You don’t…”
“C’mon, Vash,” Wolfwood says, softer. “How long’s it been since you lemme take care of you?” He takes Vash’s hand in both of his own, turning it so he can plant an openmouthed kiss on the seat of Vash’s palm. Vash’s mouth falls open, then stays that way, his gaze honed in on Wolfwood’s mouth.

It must be incredibly ridiculous for Vash to give this kind of a preface. “I’m not makin’ any promises after you bugged me for twenty minutes.”
“You have no sense of time.” Vash rolls his eyes, then quickly sobers. “Okay. This is important. Would you love me if I was a worm?”
