    Summary

"Hob," Dream says suddenly, and his voice has changed. "Do you remember your parents? Were they... were they kind?"

    Oh.

The question is so unexpected that it catches somewhere around his solar plexus like a blow. Hob is struck, suddenly, by twin memories that fit together like discordant notes in a song: a hand running soft and gentle through his hair, and a voice raised in fury.

A cold thread twists and twines its way between his ribs. He cannot help remembering what Lucienne said to him that terrible night when he found out Dream was dead.

Not all parents love their children.

(Dream and Hob settle into their new lives. There is pain that they cannot help but bring with them, but there is also healing, and there is hope.)

“I bought you quite more than your drink, in 1689,” Dream countered, the turn of his lips and pinched brow suggesting he hadn't yet decided whether to be offended.

“And I’ll never forget it,” softer, real, Hob promises, until overtaken by a shit-eating grin. “Which sufficiently made up for the time before that when I barely got three words in before you walked out on me altogether to go make a decent playwright out of Will fucking Shaxberd.”

And there was the preening, subtle though it was. An elegant eyebrow twitched upward as at some amusement. “You would fashion me in your debt, Hob Gadling?”

    “Nah. I’d see you Tuesday.”

A beat passed filled with genuine consideration, enough to make Hob’s heart leap, his weight shifting forward in his seat. “Tuesday, then.”

"Does it bother you? The—" Hob gestured vaguely towards the front door, encompassing Max and, by extension, the entire catalogue of bodies that had preceded him through it. "All of them. Does it bother you?"

Yes, Dream thought, with a force and immediacy that startled him. Yes, it bothers me. Every face, every mark on every throat, every time I arrive to find the space around you already occupied by someone whose presence I must accommodate before I can have you to myself—

"No," he said. "Why would it?"

    Summary

You always dreamed of becoming a successful fashion designer, sharing your creations with the world and bringing honor to your father. But with his severe illness and mounting expenses weighing solely on your shoulders, your plans changed, forcing you to pursue an alternative route. An intriguing offer led you to the elderly Alex Burgess, who immediately employed you as a housemaid for excellent pay. Your compassionate nature and exceptional understanding, however, convinced him to offer you an additional task with doubled compensation: gaining the trust of Dream of the Endless, imprisoned in the family’s basement for over a century. Despite being stunned upon discovering such an otherworldly being stripped of clothing and trapped in a cramped glass sphere, financial necessity for your father’s care compelled your acceptance. As you spoke to this mysterious anthropomorphic personification who never uttered a word, you found yourself drawn into his eyes that seemingly encompassed the entire universe. An ineffable bond formed between you, separated only by a substantial transparent barrier.

You couldn’t have anticipated that what commenced as modest household job would ultimately transform your existence irrevocably.
