Her lips curve, amused. “He looks like it.”
Cassian huffs a laugh. “And you look like trouble.”
“Only to the deserving.” She pats the space on the rug beside her guitar like she’s calling a dog.
He drops to sit, cross-legged, trying not to knock into anything breakable, which in this room includes at least eight people.
Nesta eyes his jeans, his boots, his too-short haircut. “So what’d you run away from? Factory? Farm? Fiancée?”
“Indiana,” he says. “Wanted to see what all the fuss was about.”

MAKE ME SCRUMNesta stared at it for one full second, and thought, somewhat deliriously, that Emerie was a dead woman. She considered getting up and leaving, walking directly back into the Edinburgh night.
Then she looked at the man wearing it, and her staring took on a somewhat different quality.
His picture hadn’t done his size justice, since he was broad enough that two people could probably live comfortably on each shoulder. Whoever had assembled him had been working from a different set of specifications than the rest of the population. Dark-haired with mesmerizing hazel eyes and a jaw that had no business being that defined in ordinary life. She was sure he never once had to think about whether he could reach the thing on the top shelf, or punch the light out of someone’s eyes. Her gaze traveled lower, and all coherent thought left her mind. Good god. He had thighs like tree trunks. The man was wearing jeans which were clearly fighting for their lives. He could crush her skull with those things.

“Holy shit, you scared me!” She yanks her wrist back, lowering the tire iron. Her heart is attempting to hammer out of her chest.
“You’re the one brandishing a weapon.” He’s holding up his hands in surrender, eyes gleaming.
“I am a woman alone at a cabin that’s supposed to be abandoned. What else was I supposed to do? This was the most suitable thing I could use in self-defence.”
“Sure. You’re very threatening. I’m positively terrified.” He nods at the tire iron. “Nesta Archeron, rural vigilante. You planning to change a tire or commit assault on a friend?”
Friend. Nesta swallows her response to that.
“I didn’t know it was you! What is—” She gestures at his face. “What is happening with all of that?”
He grins, running a hand over his jaw. “My face? What, you don’t like the mustache?”

She wears power suits to her editing job at Velaris Publishing, her hair is always immaculately styled, her apartment has been featured in a “Young Professionals Living in Style” blog post, and she’s been in a relationship with Tomas Mandray—successful lawyer, conventionally attractive, wholly appropriate—for three years.
Past tense on all of that.
Because yesterday, she’d come home early from a work trip to surprise Tomas, only to find him very enthusiastically not surprised, and very enthusiastically occupied with his paralegal, Claire, in their California King bed with the Egyptian cotton sheets Nesta had picked out.
The bed that Tomas had paid for, in the apartment that Tomas’s name was on the lease for, because Nesta had moved in with him eight months ago, instead of looking for a new place together.
