Summary
Shanks learned that praying was useless amidst the ashes of his home. He also discovered that only death can satiate his vengeance.
Years later, he arrives in Laugh Tale looking for a vampire, but all he finds is Rosinante. A man who prays in a ruined church, cares for a bunch of orphaned children, and carries a crucifix that doesn't harm him. He's also a vampire, but he doesn't behave as he should.
Throughout his life, Shanks' world has ben divided into two things: what is killed and what is not, and Rosinante doesn't fit in neither. He's a monster who acts like a man.
Shanks can't decide what's more dangerous.

Behind Usopp was the face of the devil. Metal, artificial and stilting, two lights glowing brighter than the sun he had been taken from, twiching with crosshairs akin to eyes. It had no mouth, but sharp edges of gears and machinery, winding and pulling on the artificial shell laid atop- perched on its head was a horn painted, inexplicably, a bright cyan blue. The creature took up the whole space of the vent, easily two or three times larger than him, and contorting itself in ways no organic thing could in order to rush closer. Usopp had half the mind to think, perhaps the horn is to attract a mate, before it was reaching towards him, inches away from his soft flesh, and he shot back into his body to scream and scramble anew.
Or: Usopp is human, and trapped among the alien strawhat crew. He acts, as most humans would, with an unwarranted amount of dramatics, screaming, and violence. The language barrier is certainly not helping any parties in this situation!

It felt like he’d been running forever, even if very little of that time had been spent moving at speed. His flight from everything he’d ever known had been as calculated as best he could manage with what little resources he’d had at his disposal, all of his favors called in to get his family out of dodge before he made his own attempt at this journey solo.
The empty space over his heart where there once had been a court mark seared into his flesh gave him no comfort; the people after him had proven they didn’t need something like that to track him. They had far more refined and subtle ways of keeping courtiers confined to the home territories. And Ian was no powerful adept or high-ranking defector; he was a schoolteacher. Catching him should be the easiest thing in the world.
There is a place, some say, where the Gentry do not command loyalty. It is said they choose to earn it instead.
Now if only Ian can find it before his old master drags him back.
Takes place after the events of A Crown of Flowers.

To be honest, Sanji doesn’t know. Could’ve been dead. Could have been just knocked out. These days, it’s impossible to tell, when death for him means nothing but a few minutes of inconvenience.
Sanji finds a way to stop the mutation. It could royally fuck Zoro up in the process. Or bring them closer than ever.
