Summary
Level 1 bonds, at their core, are practical things. They are incredibly clinical, especially in the MLH. Injected with grade A suppressants to keep the bond controlled, exchanging scents as briefly as was manageable, a quick barely-there shallow bite to the gland on the omega's neck, paperwork filed with the league office after a full day of observations, and suddenly an omega is considered 'safe' to play professional hockey. The omega, now bonded, is considered less likely to 'disrupt team dynamics,' whatever that means.
Shane had been nineteen when Montreal assigned him to Gilbert Comeau.
OR: omegas are only allowed to play professional hockey if they enter into a contracted bond with an alpha on their team. Shane's alpha in Montreal is more than lackluster, but what can he expect? Though, maybe a little forewarning would have been nice, because Comeau suddenly wants him gone, and Shane soon finds himself being traded to what could be the worst possible outcome: Boston.

“Promise to listen?” Shane asks seriously. “Just… hear me out, is all I’m asking. I think we can make this work.”
Ilya swallows. “I will try,” he agrees in an uncharacteristically serious tone. “But I am not doing anything that could hurt you.”
Shane nods. That’s fine, that is understandable. He can work with that.
He flips open to the page he had jotted notes down on, cheeks warming as Ilya gets a glance at the various sex toys written in his chicken scratch handwriting.
“What is a concern you have with sharing a rut?” Shane decides to start, voice even and ready to address his worries._____
Shane wants to help Ilya with his rut, but being his rut partner poses risks when both partners are alphas. Shane comes up with a plan to act more like an omega so he can help Ilya, but neglects to tell Ilya how insecure it makes him feel to not be able to help him on his own. Hurt feelings ensure.

"There is one way to control a heat," Rozanov finally says thoughtfully, and Shane opens his eyes and frowns at himself in the mirror, because the only way he's ever heard of to control a heat, to stop it in it's tracks once it's already started is—
"Where do you expect me to find an alpha to mate me in the next two hours?" Shane demands incredulously.
"I will mate you, Hollander," Rozanov says, like it's obvious.
Or, Shane's been disguising his designation to play hockey. When his suppressants fail, Ilya has an idea.

Shane still feels a little bit like he's flying. No, not flying; skimming weightlessly down the ice. Maybe that's why he can't seem to stop the question from slipping out.
"Um…how was it?" he asks, the words feeling somewhere faraway.
How was I? he doesn't add, and doesn't know if he hopes Ilya will hear the real question beneath.
