Summary
Around six in the morning, Ellis expertly places a chest tube in a thirty-seven-year-old stabbing victim, and when Jack leans over to inspect it, he is staring straight into the jagged, bloody hole in Private Milton's ribcage. The lights in T2 flicker and Jack can hear the whip of heavy canvas walls as a brutal storm rips across the desert. Milton is the one Jack had no chance of putting back together but he still tried. Fifty-five minutes of rapid infusion and internal cardiac massage and then he had called it, Milton's flat, empty heart in his hand.
Jack doesn't flinch while looking into the abyss of flesh and bone but he does lie to Ellis. "Looks good. Monitor the output, grab me after CT or if he goes south."

Jack knows exactly how to take care of him. He cooks Robby's favourite food, re-stocks Robby's fridge because he never has the time or energy to go grocery shopping, cares about Robby's cholesterol, wants to hear about the work issues bothering him, washes his hair, and makes sure the day ends with a good orgasm.
In so many ways, large and small, Jack's presence makes his life better. He just doesn't know what Jack gets out of it all.

He took a deep breath, trying to assess his own situation and state of mind. Spock’s hand squeezed his elbow softly, his sore muscles thankful for the slight pressure.
“I’m tired. Everything hurts. I don’t predict that hypo of yours is gonna be of much help, I’d bet my neck it’s a placebo.”
“But Nurse Chapel—“ Spock started.
“Knows better than to prescribe without checking with the patient if the patient is me.” He responded, careful when he stretched so as to not move his arms too much. Too bad that his shoulders were also extremely sore, and his consideration went unnoticed. He did manage to get through it without a moan, if a wince definitely skipped his defences.
“Why would she give us this, though?”
“Because she probably thought that you’d be insufferable and crowd Sickbay until I woke up, and then pester her. She’s smart, that one.”

"I am testing a theory," the Vulcan simply said before he cupped McCoy’s face in both hands, closed the distance, and enveloped McCoy's mouth with his own.
McCoy froze.

There was no polite way to put it or kinder way to phrase it – Jack Abbot had fucked it all up.
Robby has been avoiding him all day. It was simple. Any time Jack came within speaking distance Robby would move to another area in the ER as fast as his lanky legs would take him. Jack tried to wave him, call after Robby, even chase after him but it was both pointless and pathetic.

“I’m fine,” Robby said automatically, already bringing a hand to his forehead.
His fingers came away red.
“Okay,” Jack said, tone shifting instantly. “No, you’re not.”
Or, Robby keeps hitting his head on the trauma room’s overhead lights. He insists it’s because he’s tall. Jack insists it’s because he keeps getting distracted. Either way, Jack always ends up taking good care of him.

After Robby finishes flossing and pulls out his bottle of mouthwash, he looks through the glass once more, then pauses for a beat when he notices Jack is watching him. Robby's lips quirk before he flicks his gaze away and focuses on rinsing his mouth, trying to lose his thoughts in the sharp minty flavor. It doesn't work. Every so often, he risks another peek, sees Jack studying him unblinkingly, then glances away again. His cheeks heat, at odds with the comfortable chill on his own bare chest. But though he keeps waiting for Jack to tease him about looking like a chipmunk with his puffed-out cheeks, he doesn't say a word. When he finally spits the mouthwash out, Robby takes a deep breath, glances again, then huffs out a chuckle. Jack is, in fact, still focused on him. And he's smiling. "Got something to say?" Robby asks.
Jack shrugs. "Oh, don't mind me." His gaze travels slowly, slowly down Robby's body, the kind of glacial pace that sends a shiver rippling through his veins. "Just enjoying the view."
