Summary
When his cousin Eugene announces he's entering the tri-state area's annual battle of the bands and is in desperate need of a frontman, Varian is quick to volunteer. As a broke college student avoiding his past like the plague, it's not like he's got anything better to do.
But then, a certain blond moves back into town, quaking the earth with his presence as the bassist in a rival band. Because Hugo, stoking old flames and reopening emotional wounds, changes everything. With him around, Varian knows this contest isn't a fun game anymore.

Summary
Eugene burst in, panting, “We need to have a brother to brother conversation!”
Varian died a little inside. The last ‘brother to brother’ conversation they had was about why holding hands doesn’t lead to babies and other ways to get them.
Eugene closed the door, waltzing in. Like usual, he kept trying to touch the various experiments Varian had going, leading to his hand being slapped away about ten times before he spoke, “Did you see your mail?”
“No actually, I don’t read it,” Varian sighed, choosing to go back to his experiment. Now this was interesting, trying to see if he could use cobalt in the next firework show—
Eugene thrust five envelopes into his hand, each with a different nations crest on it, “Can you start reading your mail now?”
Varian groaned, but obliged, tearing each of them open. What a mistake.
They were all letters about suitors wanting to court him.
Now he was really going to be sick.
…
Varian spends an evening desperately trying to avoid being courted.
Instead, he falls for the first person who asks him about cobalt.

Everyone held their breath as the explorers rattled off things that, with just minor miscalculation, could end up being fatal. The tension in the bridge was enough to give an old man a heart attack. People all around were making silent prayers to anyone that could hear them for the astronaut’s safe return, checking calculations again and setting up systems.
(or: Varian is a scientist working for Sundrop Industries, a company working on the development of a new drug from space that could help cure cancer, until unexpectedly its stolen and certain people are trying to blame Varian for stealing it. Hugo is a detective hired by Rapunzel to find the actual culprit. The first chapter is based off the novel Project Hail Mary)
