What if when Gale goes to see Mystra during his questline she decides to show him what she has been stopping the orb doing to him, you, an artificer and Gale's partner take offence to this and goes to negotiate with one hell of a contingency plan (Read nuclear weapon).
I based this story on a scene in the Farscape episode We're So Screwed: Part 2: Hot to Katratzi (4.20), because it has lived in my brain since I watched it many years ago and I never got to do it with my artificer.
No actual Farscape knowledge required.

When Gale goes to Mystra in act 3, she decides to torture him for awhile as punishment for the orb. Artificer Tav is less than thrilled when a Sending to Gale reveals his less-than-stellar predicament. She fetches a nuclear bomb she made, attaches it to her armor, and figures out how to open the gate. She demands Gale now, and his orb removed in exchange for the crown later. Or we all go boom. Mystra agrees, sends both back to the Tabernacle, and fic ends with her putting the bomb away, and caring for Gale.

Post-game. Gale had decided not to wear the crown. On the dock, he changed his mind, and left Mae heartbroken. Mae was pregnant, but didn't know it. Lotsa feels, great fic.
Mae dies 30 years later. Her daughter found out about Gale, and decapitated him a couple of days after Mae's death.
Fic ends with Mae and Gale in the afterlife. Lots of explanations are shared. Gale was possessed by the crown and orb. They reconcile.

Summary
Magic has rules. Magic has a mistress. And Gale Dekarios knows something he was never meant to remember.
A year ago Gale made Zelara choose between himself and Astarion; she chose Astarion. A few weeks ago, Gale stopped answering their messages. Zel and Astarion show up in Waterdeep and find Gale being mind-fucked by his former goddess.
What begins as an attempt to untangle the lingering threads of Mystra’s influence over Gale turns into something much bigger—and far more dangerous. The truth lurking beneath the Weave is a secret worth killing for, and Mystra will stop at nothing to keep it buried. But Gale, Astarion, and Zelara have never been good at playing by the rules.
And Astarion and Zelara have never stopped loving Gale.
Canon Caveat: I'm playing fast and loose with Mystra and Weave lore here, outright changing it for a main plot point, and I'm not sorry about it. My lore is that Mystra is a horrible person in BG3, and I want her punished. Uh, and some magic stuff definitely goes beyond 5e rules and drifts adjacent to some magical realism. If you're here for some feels and smut and seeing Mystra get destroyed, you're in the right place. If you're here for lore, you're probably not lol.

Astarion and Tav get worried when they haven't heard from Gale in awhile, and go to his tower. They discover Mystra has been torturing him. Astarion's presence seems to protect him, so they figure out that Mystra had enslaved the weave centuries ago. They free it. A throuple forms during these events.

Summary
Overwhelmed with the number of godstruck Tadfools in the party, Vera (Tav) tasks Astarion with blowing up Gale's Mystra obsession before it inevitably ends up biting them all in the ass. She secretly wouldn't mind if they'd maybe bone or something. Astarion discovers Mystra fiddled Gale's memories before she ever fiddled Gale's bits and gets super aggro about that.
This is a story about reclaiming your own narrative when someone else has rewritten your past and finding a love that celebrates who you truly are. And lots of boning.
Canon Compliance: Happens during canon (although entirely at camp and through journal entries; not really a playthrough fic), but takes a sharp left once Astarion's discoveries are revealed. Plausible if this information were discoverable in game, but YMMW (see notes for spoilery lore details).
Smut is very prevalent throughout, extra plot relevant (even compared to my usual) and unskippable. Check the tags and make your own decisions.

Great bloodweave fic. Astarion and Tav do a timeline of Gale's life, and prove to him that Mystra altered his memory in a huge way, since the weave was still shattered (and Mystra had not yet reincarnated) when his prodigy self started using the chaos weave as a child.
The use the noblestalk to regain his memories, and he regains use of said chaos weave, stabilizes his own orb, and gets busy with Astarion.
At the end, he retrieves the crown, and uses the chaos weave to reform it into a heart for Karlach, plucking the orb from his chest to power it.
