For the entirety of his birthday, Wei Wuxian remained in his chambers, sipping on wine, hoping that tomorrow he would wake to sanity and common sense. Regardless of what lay between his legs, he had proven himself invaluable to the palace. He had served in the capacity of a thousand soldiers. What was one secret in the face of his accomplishments?
The chatter never quieted.
The dawn was rising as Lan Wangji visited Wei Wuxian unannounced.
“I’m surprised you're here,” Wei Wuxian said dryly. “Haven’t I upset you? You’ve been in court all day, managing my disgrace.”
“May I not see Wei Ying for his birthday?” Lan Wangji said softly, fidgeting with his sleeve. Then, even more softly, he added. “I am not angry.”
“It’s come and gone. Why don’t you just tell me what my fate is?”
“Three years of prison.” Lan Wangji stepped forward, reaching his hand into his sleeve. “Or marriage, should Wei Ying agree.”

Flushing in embarrassment, Wei Ying hurries over to A-Yuan and crouches to place his hands on his shoulders. “A-Yuan, that’s enough,” he says. “Sorry, Lan Zhan, he used to go to a different bookstore where they host regular storytimes, I think he thinks you’re the designated storyteller for the day—”
He gets to his feet, holding A-Yuan at his hip, and glances up to look at Lan Zhan. It’s an awful, terrible, horrible mistake. This close, every detail of his face is utterly inescapable.
“Story time,” says A-Yuan, lower lip wobbling dangerously.
Wei Ying glances around, finding people staring curiously at the scene unfolding before them. “A-Yuan,” he hisses urgently. “We need to go. I’ll tell you a story on the way home, okay?”
“Do you really need to go?”
Wei Ying starts at Lan Zhan’s voice. He’s still looking steadily at him, an unreadable expression in his eyes.
(Seven years after running away from home to pursue a story that would expose one of the biggest media scandals in recent years, Wei Ying runs into the last person he’s expecting to see at a quaint, forgotten bookstore he hasn’t set foot in for a very long time.)

“The cultivator war flooded the field with it,” Xiao Peng replies, strangely poetic. “My grandfather said so. He said, all the bodies got up and walked away, but they left the blood, and the blood stained the soil.”

Lan Wangji hadn’t expected his mid-morning Zoom meeting to be interrupted by a call from Wei Wuxian, he expected a-Yuan to be on the other end of the call even less, but when the child told him Wei Wuxian was sick and not waking up there was no other alternative that to drop everything. He had already lived in a world without Wei Wuxian, he was certainly not going to do it again.
He would pull the stars from the sky to make sure Wei Wuxian recovered, and he would stay by his side until he had done so- even if it meant never speaking of his feelings. But Wei Wuxian has stared into the abyss, how will that change him and their relationship?
