Since that time, Carpenter has heard endless variations upon the tale across the face of the Peninsula. After all, truth takes many forms, it seems. A malleable thing, pliant and pliable in the hands of those who tell the story. And yet, the bleeding heart of it, the eye of the storm, the bitter, gritty core of the pearl, lying buried under all the layers of nacre and time, stays immutable and enduring.
