It was still dark in the flat except for a few slivers of moonlight that peeked through the curtains, dancing along the hardwood floor like ribbons. As she blinked a few times to adjust to being awake, a shiver traveling down her spine as she peeled the blankets back from her bare legs, she listened to the mumbling to find its source. And in the corner of the bedroom, pressed against the wall, was the man she was looking for.

He closes his eyes as tight as he can as she grabs him by both forearms and lifts him up. He tries not to react to the burning in his shoulder from how she’s pulling him. She moves to throw him across the room, but just before he hits the floor—
    Marc jerks awake, sweating and hyperventilating.
