Xaden really, really wishes his mom were here. He hasn’t wished it so hard since the first night after his tenth birthday—when he curled up in her bed to sleep, hoping that despite what his dad had told him, he would wake up safely tucked into her side, stealing her familiar warmth and laughing at her long hair tickling his nose like he had so many times before. But she wasn’t there, and after his dad found him crying in what used to be her room the next morning, Xaden told himself he would stop wishing for her back.
And yet, in this moment, surrounded by so much death and waiting for the impending news of what has become of his dad, he aches for her.

Summary
