The coldness feathered over him like a kiss of the wind and the open air of the night. The tears that overflowed from tired eyes left hot trails that melted into the depths of frozen rivers. The earth moved with every footfall, like the dirt and the roots, and the leaves would enclose him in their hands.
He ran.
He ran until the remnant of flight brushed his fingertips, just out of his reach. He remembered the sky and the way that it held him like a blanket of darkness, an offering of rest and gentle light among the flickering stars and the kind moon. The arms of a home that he would never know.

Summary

An unfamiliar cat steps delicately toward the throne, lanky and silver-grey with bright green eyes and sharply pointed ears. Thomas hums consideringly as he looks the new arrival over from nose to tail. “You’re new to town. Come to pay your respects?” He grins, sharp and fierce. “Smart move. We’re pretty laid-back around here, but I do like it when I get the appropriate deference.”
The grey cat flicks his ears, amusement in his eyes. “Come now, don't you recognize me?” he says in a teasing tone, tail high and twitching playfully. “It’s barely been a week since my last visit. Surely you haven’t forgotten me already.”
Thomas stares in wide-eyed shock because he doesn’t know this cat but he does know that voice. “Edwin? What the fuck happened to you?”
