There was a long, awkward silence as his parents stared at him in shock. Shikamaru's mother's face twisted into a disapproving frown. Shikamaru's father remained silent, but the disappointment in his eyes was evident.
Finally, Yoshino spoke up. "What? How could you do this to us, Shikamaru? Do you have any idea how much shame this will bring to our family?" she scolded.
Shikamaru felt his heart sink. He had hoped his parents would be more accepting, but their reaction only confirmed his fears.
"I thought you would be happy for me," Shikamaru said, his voice trembling slightly, hurt by his mother's reaction.
