Summary
Trisha Elric dies from illness when Ed and Al are only 5 and 4. Her sister-in-law, an Ishvalan widow living in the far eastern mountains takes them in, but ultimately the boys lose her and parts of themselves to the war. Ending up in Central they are found by the genius Hohenheim who claims them. A cold, callused man he uses them for their skill in alchemy, forcing Edward to join the military to advance the man's ambitions and to set a game with the Fuhrer.
Struggling to survive is all Ed knows. Distrustful of his military superior, beaten down by Hohenheim, and constantly worried for his brother, he somehow starts to find a place with Mustang's Team.

“Fine!” Edward stamps his foot, heat rearing into his mouth and his eyes. “I’m sorry for the amount of paperwork you would’ve had to do if I got my head blown off, is that it? Are you happy now?”
The furrow doesn’t leave Mustang’s face, but it tilts. He stares. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb with me! I know you don’t care about me, all you care about is your own goddamn self, so stop pretending to care about me so we can finish the mission and everything can go back to normal!”
Edward is reckless. Mustang is upset. A bridge collapses - literally and otherwise - and the mission goes wrong.
All that's left to do is to build back stronger.
