Summary
Hermione and Snape are forced into each other's company by a common plot device.
"Hermione wasn't exactly sure how she had ended up in this position. Well, that wasn't exactly true. They had put her here. Hmm. That was the first time she had ever thought of Dumbledore and Voldemort as "they." She felt vaguely guilty but immediately dismissed the feeling. Voldemort had commanded, Dumbledore had encouraged…. Of course, if she was going to be fair, it wasn't just the two of them. There was the Ministry, the Malfoys, and thousands of Death Eaters. All of them had played a part in the formation of this particular moment.
This particular moment happened to involve her standing at the top of the astronomy tower with Professors Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape. Professor Snape, of course, was the one who had her attention at the moment, and that was mostly because he was holding her hand. And because they were now bound together for life."

The Ministry of Magic makes another stupid law. They're quite good at it, really.
"Severus could barely believe his eyes. She had gone and done it. McGonagall had dredged up a woman willing to sacrifice her precious life on the altar of duty and honor. Idiot. Her back was to him, but he could see that she was ridiculously young and naive. Well, perhaps he couldn't see the naiveté, but it was apparent simply because she was there in the first place."

The ice-cold mist assaulted him first, contrasting with the comparatively warm air and highlighting exactly how terrible his next two minutes were about it be. Was it worth it? To step under the spray and snuff out a little bit of his happiness forever?
He thought of the look she would send him as he walked into the Great Hall, the way her gaze always found his and held for a tiny, infinitesimal moment before she was either drawn back into conversation, or completed whatever eating-or-drinking action she’d been midway through, or—beautifully, disastrously—sent a tiny smile over at him.
The shiver that wracked through him had nothing to do with the goosebumps pricking along his entire body. The ache in his groin was unending.
Fuck.
He stepped under the spray.

“I can’t believe you put your ring in,” she accused under her breath. “I thought you and Potter were together!”
“Harry’s the best,” Theo told her in an excited undertone. “He’s also unexpectedly extremely possessive; Pans, it’s so hot.” He whined and she tsked. “He told me to come back smelling like someone else’s cologne so that’s what I intend to do. I really, really can’t wait.”
“Don’t be vulgar.” Draco had charmed the bowl to divide the rings into pairs and she didn’t have the head on her for a proper dressing down of Theo’s oversharing.
She forced herself not to be hopeful but despite her relentless will against it, felt the flicker of it just behind her heart as Draco began rattling off names.
