Underlying theme: The dereliction of duty and the consequences thereof, and that if you hold to your convictions and are resolved in your duty you will find salvation.
This takes place in the universe in which Aang did not use Sokka's jerky as fire stater in episode three, and the butterfly effect is strong indeed.

The Comet passed without the appearance of the Avatar- the war seemed to be over with the Fire Nation conquering Ba Sing Se and the Earth King disappeared. However, there is still stalwart resistance to their attempts of complete world domination; the Water Tribes hold out against the forces of the Fire Nation, and there is word of revolt against the Fire Nation in their occupied lands. Now, Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe has joined his father and other tribesmen in fighting the Fire Nation, but a new mission leads to disaster, and he is left stranded with the enemy: Princess Azula of the Fire Nation.
