Her legs wobbled and folded and she crawled. She got her mittens dirty, then took them off and touched Dess’s face. Her sister’s skin was soft and slack and cold. Not dry. Not hard. Just… cold. Her eyes weren’t open, but her mouth was. There was a little spot near her temple where something had made a hole in the skin—punched through like paper, turning soft and pushed in like a bruised fruit. There was no blood. No blood at all.
She had found her. She had found her sister. She had found her. That was what she kept thinking, over and over again, in the slow static rhythm of a prayer. She had found her. That meant something. That meant something could be done.
