“You were twelve,” Roy recollected, “Amestrian military does not permit the enlistment of minors. Without a parent or guardian’s consent.”
“S-so what? You just adopted me?!”
“Adoption and guardianship are not the same.”
Edward combed tense fingers through his frazzled hair.
“I don’t believe this,” he grumbled, facing the General, “I-I don’t believe you. You of all people!”
The indignance in Mustang’s tone was palpable.
“You were parentless children, and Pinako didn’t feel comfortable. Not if it meant letting you join the military.”
“So that made it okay for you to just do it?!”
Edward reared back his shoulder as Mustang towered over him.
“And how else would you have gotten your bodies back?”
The General’s scowl thickened.
“Or are you saying you were content to be the sad little wheelchair boy and his metal friend?”

The man’s eyes burned like embers. “Well, we’re going to save the Hero of Amestris, unlike you. We’re going to bring back the Fullmetal Alchemist.”
Edward Elric was dead. Like, fully dead. Heart no longer beating, massive blood loss, soul exiting this mortal plane, type of dead. However, that apparently wasn’t enough to make him stop existing. Ed just wants to rest goddamnit, but Truth is being a right bastard about the whole situation.
...
Or, Ed dies, but unbeknownst to his friends and family, his soul sticks around. He makes do for several years — until an alchemist performs human transmutation to try and bring him back to life. The crazy thing is… it works.
