At first, all Jayce can make out is silver, where there should be navy blue. The stranger wears a suit made entirely of metal, deeply imposing, even with the bars between them. There’s a noise from behind them, a whirring sound, and Jayce watches as a claw extends from their back, spinning menacingly. Their face is hidden behind a mask of metal, giving nothing away; all Jayce can see are piercing, glowing yellow eyes, trained solely on him.
“Mr. Talis,” a deep, robotic voice drones, echoing off the prison walls. “You are going to be coming with me.”

After his experimentation leads to the death of a teenager, Jayce is imprisoned in Stillwater Hold. Seven years later, his sentence ends early.

Note: Although Viktor’s involvement is ethically questionable, the story does not villainise any character. Jayce and Mel’s marriage is already faltering when they seek Viktor’s help, and by the end, all three find peace. No Mel-bashing involved.
Told from Viktor’s point of view, with one chapter from Jayce’s perspective. The story revolves around a lot of pining, steamy sex, unspoken thoughts, desires and trauma, flawed characters, and the longing for love, culminating in a happy ending where everyone is happy. “… incinerated my prototypes,” he is saying as Viktor watches him; half-conversational, half-explanatory. “A few times, actually, by now. It’s like cat and mouse: I make them, they incinerate them … I don’t think they ever realised I had any other crystals or they’d definitely incinerate those, too.”
“Bastards,” Viktor says, seriously.
Jayce grins up at him again. “Yeah,” he says, “bastards. The whole lot.”
They look at each other oddly, both blinking. Then Jayce grins again, as though he is in on some sort of great joke that only the two of them are privy to. For the first time in a very long time, Viktor feels very aware of his mask standing between the world an his face.
Perhaps the cooling system is clogged again. He feels oddly warm.
Or: Zaunite shut-in Viktor hides in his lab and behind his mask, until a tipsy Academy drop-out stumbles into his life on a reckless gander into the Undercity. Something blooms.

“Viktor…” Jayce tries one last time to bring him back to his senses. This shouldn’t happen, not like this. Not when Viktor is a puddle of tears and Jayce’s heart feels like it’s being shredded from the inside out.
But he would be lying if he said he didn’t need it, too. One last time, one last night.
As if hearing his thoughts, Viktor repeats his plea once more, a whispered beg. “Please, Jayce. Just one last time, please…”
Jayce has already given in.
He nuzzles his nose against Viktor’s, inhaling the scent of tears on his dampened skin, breathing in his soft cries, the cavernous depth of his pain.
“Okay, baby. Okay,” Jayce whispers into the soft skin of Viktor’s temple.
And then, he kisses Viktor back. Unlike the frantic smashing of lips like before, he kisses Viktor softly. Languidly. Like they have for hundreds of hours before this. Like they never will again.

Jayce would be making his excuses for the evening, maybe finishing his wine or wishing a friend who will leave early in the morning a farewell. Viktor toys with the pendant around his neck, a holiday gift from Jayce, something he hasn’t taken off in the week since it was given.
