Summary
“You make me act insane,” he mutters.
“Me?” Olly hisses. “I make you act insane? I’m out here in the middle of the fucking wilderness because of you.”
Qifrey releases him to pull his compass out. “You love the wilderness. You also love following me around. Especially when I tell you not to.”
“Yeah, that’s the exact insanity I’m referencing. Wasn’t like that before I met you. I hated going outside. That’s why they brought me to the Assembly, remember?”
“Well. Who can say what I was like before I met you?”

Summary
Animals are simple. They get injured, they run. They hide. They survive, and when they reach safety, they are consumed entirely by the parasite within them that was hitching a ride.
If Qifrey were as simple as an animal, his life should have ended when he was brought to the Assembly and given a warm meal and a soft bed. That should have been it, poof, end of Qifrey before he even knew who he was or what he was missing out on.
But humans worry. They can think about the future. They can suspect that the nice adults who pulled them out of coffins and brought them home might not have the best intentions for them. They can fear and they can dread being turned into a tree against their will.
What does safety even mean?

Summary
It’s good, the discomfort he feels. The guilt. The exhaustion of living like this. This is a gift, Olly’s gift to him—the ability to lie right beside him, the kindest man that might exist in the whole world, and feel just a bit rotten. More than a bit.
He gets to have Olly and keep him in his memories, which is more than Olruggio gets. He gets to know exactly how he feels and why and not have it stripped from him. He gets to love him and live. It should be enough. For Olruggio, who made it happen, it has to be enough.
So why come here to torture himself with what he can’t have?

Summary
“Years ago,” Qifrey says suddenly, “And you won’t remember this, you made me make you a promise. And I’ve kept it, until now.” As he talks, Qifrey fidgets with his hat. He turns it around and around in his hands, then unhooks the ribbon from the point.
“Hey—”
Olruggio steps forward as if to stop him, but it’s done. Qifrey twists the ribbon in his hand, crumpling it.
“That’s—”
“Your ribbon. And my promise. I’ve worn them both for years. For you. And for myself. But Olly—I asked you here because I can’t do it anymore.”

Summary
To save his life, Qifrey the Witch had to do two things: lose his eyesight, and make everyone forget all about—well, Qifrey the Witch.

☆ Or: decades after he made the world forget him, Qifrey meets Coco, Agott, and Olruggio for the second first time.

Summary
Behind him, footsteps. And a voice says, “You’re the shoemaker?”
There is a moment where Patroclus only has the impression of gold—golden curls resting against broad tanned shoulders and a gold circlet hidden in his hair—before separate features emerge to create the image of a prince, finely albeit simply dressed in a white shirt tucked into a pair of dark blue pants.
“The shoemaker’s apprentice,” Patroclus corrects him gently. He bows just a little. Green eyes watch as he does. “I’m here to take some measurements. For your new—” His eyes fall on the prince’s feet and the words die in his throat. He’s wearing a heavy wooden shoe on his left foot and a cloth slipper on the other. Patroclus tries to take it in stride but finds himself looking questioningly at the prince.
“You are curious about my shoe,” the prince says. His voice is perfectly steady, unreadable.
In the tiny kingdom of Phthia, a golden prince is cursed with invulnerability except for a vulnerable heel. An exile apprenticed to a shoemaker is commissioned by the palace to create a shoe the prince can fight in.
A fairy tale about a curse, a magical shoe, a war, a doomed hero, an exile, destiny, and love despite everything.
