Summary
There's a boy still running across that street. Sixteen years old, ammunition boxes in his hands, his corporal's blood cooling against his cheek. He's been running for almost twenty years. The man who came back, Twilight, Loid Forger, whoever he is now, he left that boy behind.
Had to.
You can't build a life carrying a child soldier with you. Except he's still there. In the dreams. In the flinch when artillery sounds like thunder. The war ended but the boy never stopped running.
Never made it across.
The man walks through Berlint and pretends he's whole, for the mission, but he left half of himself bleeding in that street.

Summary
“What’re you saying, Handler?”
“What I’m saying is, I need a favor from you. I need you to protect this girl while we put an end to this.”
“I’m retired—by your orders, Handler—I don’t do missions anymore.”
“I know, but you’re still the best agent we ever had. You’re the only one I trust to keep her safe.”
“I’m an unemployed bachelor living alone out in the middle of nowhere. That’s hardly a good environment for a kid.”
“It won’t be that long, just a few months at most. You don’t need to raise her, for crying out loud, just make sure she stays alive and well. We’ll compensate you and everything,” the Handler says.
“What if I say no?”
A futile question.
“Ultimately, I can’t force you to do anything anymore,” she says, “But the poor kid has been through so much. I’m asking you as a friend to protect this little girl.”
She sucks in a breath and holds it, as if debating to say what’s on her mind.
“You fought so children could have a safe world to grow up in, right?” Her voice is gentle and sincere. “Please, Twilight, she needs that world more than ever.”

Summary
The first time they meet is a coincidence. The connection they make is incidental. The relationship that follows is a rarity. How it ends (or doesn’t) isn’t up for debate.
A spy and an assassin, together? Stranger things have happened.

Summary
When Loid adopted Anya and they became the Forgers, he made sure that the families with the surnames Williams, Levski, Klein, and Roche that were most likely to adopt were either no longer in Berlint or at least lived in or worked on the other side of the city. For the ones that were too close for his liking, he made sure to keep Anya away from any neighborhoods or establishments that would increase the chance of a run-in. In a city of almost 1.3 million people, there was a very small chance that the Forgers would run into any of them by happenstance. It was such a small chance that Loid had discounted the possibility after doing the math.
Perhaps that chance hadn’t been small enough.

Yor hates this man even before his arrival, but Captain Loid Forger is not what any of the Briars expect. Little by little, Loid demonstrates the kind of man he is and he gradually earns the Briars' trust and respect. Yor feels conflicted; she's supposed to hate all people from Westalis, still she can't help falling in love with Loid Forger, her enemy.
