In the water, Veritas drifted down and down.
… From the depths of the graveyard of the fallen stars below, a long, twisting shape emerged. The starlight blurred that at first distant figure, and its form was indistinct. A hand was extended—a hand with fingers that terminated in sharp claws, the tips so finely honed they seemed they might slice the water itself. And yet, when that hand pressed against Veritas' chest, no blood was drawn.
The chest under that hand was utterly still, and without movement.

Argenti blinks once, twice. “Am I?” That big hand on his back draws him closer still, tugs until their bellies are touching with each shift in the current, each drag of the net. Another tentacle slides up, tracing over the line of Boothill’s fins and he doesn’t stop Argenti. This, he thinks, this is what he’d been craving. Contact, warm physical affection, something he’s only heard about.
“Most people don’t get a chance to,” Boothill continues, digging the tips of his claws into Argenti’s skin. Pinpricks, probably, but he knows he’s made his point when Argenti’s mouth falls open, when the gills on his throat flutter and shake.
