"Link woke to a pair of hands pressed against his chest, shaking him gently awake. He saw Zelda leaning over him: her eyes wide, and her face pale even in the stark morning light. The sheets of their bed slipped off her shoulder and onto the floor below.
He swallowed. “...What?”
Her breath shuddered, her long hair blowing from her face, and she said:
“I had a dream.”
The earth shook, the house rattling like parchment drums.
The sky had begun to fall."

So when she learns about Cucco, a game soldiers like to play in the barracks to get under each other's skin, a game in which Link is undefeated, she’s determined to come out victorious. Summary
This is the first part of a series in the world of BOTW from 10,000 years ago. It details the first meeting between Link, a Knight of Hyrule, and Zelda, the Princess.
It starts from Link's Exam to become a Knight and then things go wrong slightly. Each chapter alternates between Link and Zelda's POV.
The only thing Link hadn’t accounted for in his grand scheme, was the Princess herself. And she spotted him lazing outside on her Balcony because he had pushed his luck too far this time. For a brief two seconds, although it felt longer, they had made eye contact, and she had smiled. And then ducked back into her study.
Link froze. Her eyes were a striking, sparkling jade.
She had smiled at him!

Her hand grazes the area next to her. It’s an open invitation. If he stays where he is, she will leave him in peace from that point forth. But, if he comes forward, she will speak her mind.
The choice is his.
Will he take it? It's always quite the coin toss.
There’s silence. Heavy, oppressive, unbearable silence. A second that lasts a year.
Then, grass shifts, he walks towards her, and Zelda starts to think that foolish boy has no desire to be left in peace.

But while Link has gone great lengths to recall his past lives and grapple with the Curse of Demise, Zelda has only just begun.Post-BOTW. This will be long. It would probably be helpful for you to read "When the Wind Whispers" to understand the lore I've woven behind the Champion's Ballad. Important to note a lot of this is based on the reincarnation interpretation of the LoZ timeline.
5/16/20: Having appeased Vah Naboris and Vah Ruta, and announced Zelda's return to the crowds in Castle Town, Link and Zelda now venture to Eldin to walk in Daruk's footsteps.
5/2023: I'm reinvigorated by TOTK and this will be worked on again!

“I don’t understand,” he says, and his arms are wrapped around himself now, as if he is cold. They are in Hebra, yes, but he can’t help but feel as if the cold has nothing to do with how he is beginning to shiver.
“What do you mean you don’t understand?” Revali demands, turning back to him, his glare even deeper on his face than before. “I’ve expressed myself clearly to you many times before - it is no fault of mine that you see yourself as better than I simply because of the sword on your back. Surely you cannot blame me for cutting my losses here - I’ve wasted enough time on you as it is.”
“I-I don’t understand,” Link repeats, because for once, he truly doesn’t know how it was that he didn’t please this individual. He thought he understood, before, but Revali has grown more and more upset, and Link simply does not understand what he has done wrong to cause this.
He wants to fix this.
It is the first time in his life he can ever truly remember wanting something.
It is as his vision begins to blur (he doesn't know why) that Revali’s expression shifts.

Summary
Gannon died, but the monsters he summoned didn’t die with him, and a gold-manned lynel decided that he would like to rule over the Sacred Land, gathering an army of monsters and Gannon cultists to his banner. After the devastation of the Calamity and the Upheaval, the remnants of Hyrule were – despite Link’s best efforts – not able to survive this new threat, and the last embers of the Queendom of Hylia were snuffed out.
In a timeline not yet doomed, King Rhoam decides to take the Royal family to the Temple of Time to pray to Hylia for guidance. He wasn’t expecting Her to respond, much less send a Hero.
Link, still adjusting to a body that isn’t ruined by guardian blasts and Malice submersion, is determined that this time, Hyrule will stand.

Though times were dark, she managed to lead her people—bloodied and broken—through the immediate dangers of The Great Calamity. As the sole surviving Champion, it was all she could do.

The first timeline ends in an elegy.
The second becomes a requiem.
The third timeline carries the same refrain as the elegy and the requiem. It’s an encore of the same chorus, of the well-worn melody that sings of a reluctant hero and a princess of spies.
Yet the verses of the third timeline are different enough to change the whole song.
