They were driving in the steaming Nevada desert one early evening, hopping between county lines, when she turned to look at him. It had been a rough few days. He was curt and moody in the heat of the Southwest, increasingly annoyed by a lack of creature comforts, and undoubtedly, like her, edgy any time they entered a landscape that reminded them of buried train cars and corrupt experiments. It hurt her to watch him. But something about his face was softening as they cruised along the interstate that evening, the sun casting a dramatic glow on the terracotta ground as it set.
