    Summary

Hua Cheng went still, taking a moment to process what Xie Lian had just said. He'd never been anything to anyone before, never meant anything. He'd never wanted anyone to care about him. For Hua Cheng, the most important thing had always been to take care of himself.

Other people didn't matter. Everyone took care of themselves; there was no reason to extend a hand. But for Xie Lian, he wanted to be more than a face in the crowd, more than someone who made him laugh sometimes or remembered his favourite movie (The Princess Bride, of course). Hua Cheng had never cared about being special to anyone before, but knowing that he made Xie Lian happy did things to him, made him feel things he'd never felt.

Why was he forcing down tears over something so simple?

    Summary

Just beyond the line of trees, trying desperately to reach the water, was a white horse. It stumbled, falling to its knees as each attempt to move forward was prevented by the snare trap tightly bound around the fetlock on one of its back legs. Blood marred the otherwise pristine white of its coat where it had been tugging, helplessly trying to break free.

The horse continued to struggle, sounds of distress breaking the tranquil quiet. Bravely, or perhaps foolishly, Hong'er stepped into view, holding his hands out placatingly. "Shh, it's okay. I-I can help you. Just— I need you to let me get the snare off."

    Summary

An essay with quotes pulled from the Seven Seas translation of tgcf and fan translations of the unrevised version of tgcf, supporting the argument that Hua Cheng is a kinder person than fans often give him credit for.

This essay covers his good deeds, his self-esteem issues, his similarities with Xie Lian, how respectful he is of Xie Lian's autonomy, and how Xie Lian does not just "make excuses" for him all the time.
