Summary
Ukyo's hearing is more sensitive than most. He can pinpoint the point of origin of a sound from kilometers away, interpret distant muttering through the clamor of a battle, and even hear the heartbeats of those around him. Ukyo's hearing is not just more sensitive than most people, it's more sensitive than most animals.
It’s also far from natural.
Ukyo grew up as a test subject part of Japan's most well-kept secret. His time in the JSDF was a brief and blissful escape, from which he dreaded his return. But just before he was re-aquainted with the life of a lab rat, a miracle—a tragedy—a worldwide petrification gave him a chance at freedom. Or, perhaps it would have, if “freedom” didn't mean helping Tsukasa shatter countless statues. Perhaps it would have, if survival in the stone world wasn’t all masks and mind games. Perhaps it would have, if Hyoga weren't so determined to put him back in a cage.
Funny thing about cages: if you cover them in blankets, you can almost forget about the bars. Offer a piece of cheese, and the rat will trap itself inside.

Fantastic concept of course [ we've always been a sucker for experiment AUs!! ] and getting to see an expansion on Ukyo is always such a treat. He is by far our favourite character so seeing such a talented author write from his perspective is awesomesauce ^o^

Technically we started this many years ago but it's been a while so we want to reread it. This author is so good at writing it's spooky...seeing Peasley's grief makes our heart ache, we fear. The writing is so raw yet not direct at the same time. It's nice not being hit over the head with the plot and being able to figure it out for yourself...and then getting punched in the gut once you figure it out!

Kinda hilarious how this author has written multiple koopaling-centric fics we read and we didn't even realise until we actually looked at their profile...just goes to show how skilled they are! This fic is super dark and takes a really interesting spin on the koopa kingdom's culture as a whole! Normally not a fan of plots similar to this one but the writing is fantastic and we're super glad our protagonist isn't lying down and taking it (one of our biggest pet peeves). That could change of course, but we're just glad she didn't fold immediately!
